About

Amelia Poon

I am in my second year studying for a Master of Fine Art at the Cambridge School of Art, having completed my BA(Hons) there.

To summarize the various themes supporting in my practice, I believe that my work, along with time, is evolved amidst the concepts of minimalism, abstract expressionism and bi-culturalism with personal aspiration of ecology whenever possible. Recyclable materials such as newspaper and bamboo are my preferred medium.

During my undergraduate course, on the top of the initial encounter with Western style painting, I also engaged into the work of Chinese Brush painting for which simplicity was the objective.

On the sculpture side, due to my Anglo-Chinese background, the work practice is bi-cultural. My first piece of installation, Cuboids, MMIX –MMX, composes of paper (using Chinese and English newspapers) brick-shaped units being put together to reflect and address my idealism for a ‘one peaceful world’ as a result of amicable multinational interactions. One of my other sculptures, Mobiles, is created out of recycled newspapers. Each straw-like unit is first meticulously rolled up one by one and then put together with the idea of Optical Art in mind. Three pieces of this series have been short listed by a number of prestigious establishments, making me become nationally recognised. The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2010, The London International Creative Competition, 2010 and The Threadneedle Prize, London 2010.

More recently I presented one of my sculptures to Cambridge Regional College as part of Adult Learners' Week. Please see my Publicity page for more information on this.

I continue to put on further exhibitions and look forward to exploring cultural and personal relationships and addressing tradition and innovation in my artwork.
